Tyler Burey - Scout Report
Vs Carlisle United (28/08/2021)
Tyler Burey is currently on a season long loan from Millwall and has made a brilliant start to the season. I decided to see how he’s developing under Dave Challinor, in his side who have also made a great start with 3 wins and 1 loss.
Name: Tyler Burey
Age : 20
Position: LW/RW/ST
Club: Millwall FC (on loan at Hartlepool United)
Data
Although it is (very) early on in the season and the data is seen to be unreliable at this stage, - due to it being a small sample - we can get an indication on how Burey has performed in his 271 minutes played. It is important to understand that these numbers may regress, which is expected, as more minutes are played in the season.
Data via @OptaAnalyst
0.52 xG p90
11 carries p90 with an average distance of 12.68m
5 shot ending carries
3 Goals, 1 Assist (Hartlepool’s top goalscorer)
These particular stats is where Burey is standing out compared to others in League 2. But what do they mean? What do they tell us? Well, the xG p90 tells us that Tyler is getting into good goal scoring positions consistently (so far), which is a very promising sign. He also seems to be very good at progressing the ball forwards for his team as indicated by the high number of carries completed p90 minutes. To compliment this, his end product seems to be also quite good as shown by the 5 shot ending carries and his 3 goals so far this season. Now, as mentioned before, this is from a very small sample and so, these may change throughout the season. Time for the eye test!
Tactical
Burey has started 3 out of the 4 league games for Hartlepool this season. In all 3 of his starts, he has started as a striker in a 532 system. This is a different position compared to his limited minutes at Millwall, where he played predominantly as a winger on either side. Throughout the game, Burey mainly played on the shoulders of the Carlisle defenders, looking to get in behind constantly. Only now and then would he look to drop deeper to receive and link with his teammates. A common type of movement from Burey would be to drift out to the left flank to receive, which would then follow with him driving at the opposition defence in towards the penalty area. Tyler did this consistently and to a good standard. An area where he could improve though is his movement, in particular making different types of movement to get away from his marker. Often he would be quite static whilst central, and personally I would like to see him look to drop a tad deeper and link up more with his teammates. However, this could be a tactical instruction. Out of possession, Burey presses with good angles often forcing his opponent wide. he presses with good intensity and aggression.
Physical
Tyler possesses a tall, skinny yet athletic build. He has very good speed over short and long distances, due to his big strides. Despite his tall frame, Burey is agile and is able to shift his body well at different paces. He has a good work rate, which was showed by his relentless closing down of the opposition and his desire to chase down loose balls. Aerially, Burey struggled, and was often out-competed by the opposition CB’s. If he continued to play as a striker, I believe he would need to become stronger.
Technical
One of his first touches in this game was a brilliant, first time strike into the top right hand corner. Showed the ability to confidently strike the ball on his right foot first time. Whilst dribbling, Burey remains fairly upright, but possesses a close control of the ball taking frequent, little touches to entice the opposition. At times, he was often doubled up on by Carlisle. Due to his close to control, Tyler is able to shift the ball (either way) and change pace very well, complimented with body feints to throw the opposition off. Despite this, he seemed to be very right footed, rarely using his weaker, left foot. This meant he regularly looked to cut inside on his right foot. Developing his weaker foot into his game could be very beneficial to him. His crossing was fairly average - they were into good areas but not met by his teammates. Burey showed good awareness of when to turn, showing good spatial recognition. He used his body well to turn players often without touching the ball.
Mental
Tyler is a player that oozes confidence, which is shown through the way he plays. Always looks to takes players on and is confident in his ability to do so. He also celebrated directly in front of the away fans, showing the right amount of arrogance, which I believe is needed to become a top player. Throughout the game he also showed good decision making, often choosing the correct choice on when to take a man on or use the overlap from the wingback.
Conclusion
Burey has made a great start to his loan in League 2, even whilst playing in a different position. If he continues this level of output, I believe a loan to a League 1 club in January could be on the cards, as this would help develop him and give him a harder challenge. Long term, I see Tyler as a left winger who can provide goals and assists and is a player who I believe has high potential. I will be monitoring more of his performances.
